Cemetery's Regulations and Rules for Headstones and Grave Markers
Most Cemeteries have regulations regarding either size, shape, color.
In addition, many of the Cemeteries have fees for foundations and or installation of the Headstone.
We created this section to assist you with the necessary questions to ask the Cemetery when you speak with them.
Here are questions to ask:
It's best to get a copy faxed to you for your records.
- What type of memorial is allowed where your loved one is interred?
Granite or Bronze?
- Are there any permits or applications that are required
- Is there an installation and or foundation fee? - how much is it?
- Next, what style - flat, slant or upright headstone.
- What size is allowed? (The Cemetery will be able to give you either the exact measurements or minimum and
maximum feet and inches for the plot.)
- Do they allow vases?
- Are there any restrictions for granite color?
- Must they be polished on all sides or just the front and back(In the case of flat grave markers, must the sides be
smooth or rough.
Things You Should Know
Most Cemeteries are cooperative and ethical, however, there are some things you should know.
Many times, Cemeteries have a sales staff or someone who would like you to purchase from them or in some cases, a local
monument company that they are somehow affiliated with..
When you are asking for their regulations, they may try, and sometimes in an aggressive way to talk you into purchasing only
from them.
The most common things our customers tell us they hear are:
-They are not responsible for the memorial if it is not purchased from them.
This is not true. While they are not responsible for acts of vandalism in any case, they are certainly responsible for any damage
done by their workers. This technique is used to stop you from saving a lot of money purchasing it elsewhere.
-They may also tell you that if you purchase from an outside source, there will be a installation fee and they will waive it if you
purchase it from them. In other words, they are tacking on extra charges as punishment for not purchasing it from them. This
may be illegal and should not be used as a technique to talk you out of saving many dollars on your memorial.
Finally, they may tell you that they do not accept Headstones form outside monument dealers.
This is illegal.
If any of these scenarios have happened to you, you have recourse. You may tell them that you know this is illegal and will
contact the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau. This will more than likely get you the cooperation you
deserve.
